Conceptual artist Alina Khalitova recently immigrated from Russia because of her anti-war position. The completion of one stage in her life, followed by immigration, led her to see and analyse her art practices more clearly.

At the exhibition Way to Light , we have selected works most indicative of the direction Alina has taken to develop her thinking in recent years. She explores four main areas in her art: space, light, visual perception and context.

Alina has an art historian background and considers everything in a socio-cultural context; therefore, her works are almost always site-specific. The artist notes she likes the intimacy of meeting her work with viewers when it is located in an unexpected place. She believes that this provides an opportunity for elitism to be removed from the exhibition space where the work is usually displayed.

Since her first works, Alina realised that she was fascinated by light, its nature and the effects it produces. Initially, she performed photosensitive experiments with analogue photography, trying to document the moment when light, as a substance, physically presents itself. As she pursued this, her attention shifted towards visual perception.

How does a polaroid camera work?

The development of analogue photographs usually requires film reels, a darkroom and photosensitive chemicals. A polaroid camera combines all these elements by integrating the film and the chemicals into the same paper. In an analogue camera, the film reacts to the lighting and forms a negative, a photograph in which the colours are complementary to the original. Red becomes cyan, green becomes magenta, and blue becomes yellow. In a darkroom, the negative is transferred to photographic paper containing silver halides, which react to the exposure and form the final photograph. The chemicals in the photo paper are extremely sensitive to light. Therefore, development must take place in the dark.

If you are a real art lover, you can visit a beautiful exhibition in the Moco Museum at the Museumplein in Amsterdam: a real eye-catcher! It is located in a beautiful mansion that was designed in 1904. Unfortunately, the corona measures have resulted in somewhat stricter rules. This means that you cannot enter the museum without a corona ticket or with a QR code that indicates that you have been tested negatively. The QR code is valid for 24 hours after the time of testing. Anyone who has no problems with this and who does not have corona can go to the museum carefree to enjoy the many exhibitions that are currently available. Modern and contemporary art is made accessible in the museum to a broad and young audience. The people who do not want a QR code are therefore not allowed.
